Defending the Jews in the face of a totalitarian regime
By Professor Yisrael Channokoglu
Despite all the words about democracy and supposedly democratic decisions, there is no democracy in Israel. The present government, which was chosen by elections, exploited the weakness of the ruling system and became a totalitarian regime with fascist characteristics, is acting to repress the national religious population. If we will not stop this regime, it will bring about the destruction of the state of Israel as a Jewish state. I must make it clear that I myself am a Jew who does not cover his head, who does not wear a kippa.
Why is there no real democracy in this country, and how did the ruling party deteriorate into a totalitarian regime? This event was brought about by a combination of failures in the system and in the method of rule as described below. It is important to emphasize that there are a multitude of causes for this situation. Correcting one of them will not solve anything.
A. There are no direct elections in this country
By definition, democracy is a method of rule wherein the people choose their representatives to the governmental agencies. Whereas in most democratic countries the people truly choose their representatives via direct elections, in Israel we are only permitted to choose a political party. The representatives are chosen by the bosses of the party and therefore there is no direct connection between the elector and his representative in the Knesset. As a result of this, the loyalty of those elected is to the party bosses or the leaders of the party and not to those who elected them.
B. there is no separation of powers in this country
A central principle as to how governments should correctly act is that there should be checks and balances between different arms of the government, this in order to prevent centricity of power and corruption. It is a widely accepted fact that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
The three centers of power of the regime are: the government which is the executive power, the Knesset with its the legislative authority and the supreme court and other courts which are the judicial power.
In Israel, the government and the Knesset are not mutually exclusive; members of the government are also members of the Knesset. The Knesset has no absolute freedom in legislation as the government dictates what is forbidden and what is permissible to legislate, this via the coalition and via different committees of ministers that are involved in the process of making laws. Thus, the Knesset can not act independently, it is in constant fear of the reactions of the government, thus the Knesset can not carry out its role as independent ombudsman of the executive power.
The open channel between the roles of the government and the members of the Knesset allows the process of "owning members of the Knesset" by giving them political bribery in the form of ministerial rank, budgets and others bribes. For example, during the period of the Oslo agreements, the Rabin government bought two M.K.'s (Goldfarb and Gonnen Segev) from the Tzomet political party, a right wing party, by giving them governmental jobs. Gonnen Segev's price was the job of minister of energy and infrastructure. This very same Gonnen Segev is today in jail for internationally trading hundreds of thousands of ecstasy pills (a drug)!!! Thus the Rabin government, by purchasing the vote of that professional con man and other votes as well condemned the nation of Israel to the catastrophe of Oslo, which resulted in thousands of deaths, a number unprecedented and unheard of since the state was born.
Ariel Sharon, a left wing member of the Mapai party, who entered the Likkud much like a Trojan horse, perfected the notorious left wing method of purchasing votes. He purchased M.K.'s en masse, even from his own political party, all for the purpose of the latest catastrophic agreement called "disengagement". It is plausible to assume that his reason for doing so is that this is the only way he can save his skin, and the skin of his sons, from a jail sentence. This method of his can be given a variety of derogatory names, but certainly can not be called a "democratic process."
C. The Supreme Court has turned the regime into an oligarchy.
In face of the absence of an independent and strong legislative body, the Supreme Court, as the highest authority in the judicial system, in a method called "judicial activism", has taken upon itself the authority to approve or reject laws, even though there is no constitution in this country. In essence the Supreme Court assumed for itself the "power of the people" (demos+cratos) which is supposed to be represented by the Knesset. Thus it made the democracy of this county into an oligarchy, i.e. a minority rule, wherein the minority is the left wing elite.
In the United States, as an example of a democracy, judges are chosen via direct personal elections by the voters of their region. The nominee for the position of judge in the American Supreme Court is recommended by the president, then that proposal by the president has to pass an in-depth hearing by the senate. In some cases the nominee is rejected because of his personal views, even views that he may have held in the distant past. On the other hand, here in Israel, the judges of the Supreme Court are recommended by the chief justice of the Supreme Court (Aharon Barrak); he makes suggestion to a committee whose job is to appoint judges. This committee is made up of representatives from among the judges, the different parties and the central office of lawyers. The coalition that exists between the judges and the left wing party has turned this committee into a rubber stamp, so it seems, to any recommendation by the chief justice.
Much has been written on the topic of the present makeup of the Supreme Court, and how it essentially is merely the judicial arm of only the left wing of Israel. It does not represent the religious population which makes up more than 30% of the population; it does not represent the Sephardic, traditional, Mizrachi population which makes up more than half of the Jewish population. However, this government is very concerned with meeting the needs of the Arab population. It makes it its business to mete out national lands belonging to the Keren Kayemet to the Arabs (lands that were bought with money of Jews around the world and those of the first aliyot), it also forcibly settles Arabs in Jewish settlements, and neutralizes the authority of the rabbinate on all issues of Halacha. There is no doubt that the present makeup of the supreme court would have rejected the phrase "we proclaim the birth of the Jewish state in the land of Israel" which appears n in the declaration of independence of the state of Israel, on the basis of that is "racist."
The Supreme Court is doing nothing at present to prevent the planned expulsion of close to ten thousand Jews from their homes which will in effect turn them into refuges in their own land. If the same thing were to happen to terrorists, the Supreme Court would have long ago nullified the decree calling for this action, as they did in the past. One of many examples is the opposition of the Bagatz to the attempt to expel the heads of the Hammas movement to Lebanon, a plan that was initiated by the former Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin.
In summation, there is nothing kosher about the decisions of the Supreme Court; its decisions are "trefe" from a democratic point of view.
D. Freedom of broadcasting and limitations of expression
During the course of the last three governments there has been a broadcasting system that reaches every house in Israel and poisons the values of Jewish morality and Zionism each hour of every day. It is called the national broadcasting authority (NBA). The seventh great power. As in other fascist regimes, the left wing Israeli faction has taken control of the mass communication media as well.
In the United States of America, the country where I lived before I made aliya to Israel, each large city has tens of radio and TV stations; in the world of freedom of expression as exists in the USA, there is no such concept as "a national broadcasting system". This is a creation of the Bolshevik Israeli elite which prevents freedom of speech.
The left wing elite acts to prevent the creation of any competing media station. Right wing members of Knesset, out of fear of what it will do to their personal status on the national media; don’t lift a finger against this monopoly of the NBA.
Do the people want a choice? They basically have a choice: Kol Yisrael on station one, Kol Yisrael on station 2, Kol Yisrael on station 3 and Kol Yisrael on station 4. Heaven forbid that there should be a free diverse choice of stations.
Do the people want a choice? They got regional stations; but heaven forbid a station which can be heard all over the country. The pre-conditions for establishing a regional station are so rigid that only the extremely wealthy can do so.
It seems to me that the situation in the country is much worse than that which existed in the period of the Bolsheviks, in what was once the USSR. There the general population knew that Pravda and the TV and radio stations were merely lie-spreading arms of the propaganda machine of the regime. But here in Israel, most of the people naively accept the monopoly of Kol Yisrael as a natural circumstance. In the USA propaganda programs are broadcast for free. Here in Israel citizens are required to pay a TV tax to the broadcasting authority. And lest you dare not to pay -- a team of thugs who work for the NBA will impound anything they like form your home. With the money of naïve citizen who pay this required tax, the NBA continues its inciteful broadcasts against the morals of the Israeli people, and acts in an overall manner of corruption and wastefulness.
One of the commonly heard assertions is:" this country is in a state of war and therefore it needs a national broadcasting system: But Kol Yisrael long ceased to be the voice of the true Israel. It has become "Kol Yishmael". What are primarily heard are the voices of the representatives of the Arab terrorists, and not the voices of the brave Jews, those with national pride. Kol Yisrael has become the means of psychological warfare that stems from the left wing parties. For example, a recent broadcast referred to the most frequently heard man on the Israel media, who is none other than Abu Maazen….How would the Americans react if the most frequently broadcast person there were Sadaam Hussein or BinLaaden?
For many years the government did not allow Arutz Sheva to broadcast from within the borders of Israel. When the special law was enacted to allow Arutz Sheva broadcasts, it was overthrown by a Supreme Court decision. The "religious stations" which are identified with religious organizations are constantly persecuted by workers in the NBA under the false premise that they are interfering with the broadcast of the air waves of the control tower in the airports and thus endangering planes. But when the Kol Yisrael broadcasting station in Rammallah was given over to the Palestinian authority, no one talked about the dangers to flights. No one complains about the broadcasts of the suicide bombers, or the clearly inciteful broadcasts of the authority, or the advertisements that encourage kindergarten children to become Shahiddim, these are all permitted as if they were inciting peace in our area. The Arabs have unlimited freedom of broadcast. The danger seems to come only from Jews who might spread the word of love of Torah and love of the land of Israel…..
E. The district attorney's office and law enforcing bodies have become a tool for repression of Jews
And now the most difficult part of this article. In a normal regime, law enforcing bodies, such as the police or the district attorney's office must act in accord with legal permits; there may not be preferential treatment given to any political group. Because of the centrality of the regime as described above, the law enforcing bodies have become an arm of the regime for the express purpose of repressing Jews.
In order to understand the situation, one must view the entire picture. The left wing parties which have been in control since the state was created realized that their electorate power is on the decline and that the electoral power of the national camp, which includes religious, nationalistic, Zionistic Jews is on the continual rise. In order to continue to rule, the left wingers had no choice but to unite with the Arabs. Only thus could they once again become the majority electorate group they once were.
In accordance with this new covenant that was created between the left and the Arabs, law enforcing agencies became a central force. The purpose of the enforcement is to ensure the aforementioned cooperation. Therefore there is a while total disregard of any crimes or offenses committed by the left and the Arabs on one hand, and total suppression of the religious Jews on the other.
Before the Oslo accord, there was wise-spread cooperation between the government and the Arabs and in exchange for voting for left wing parties the left wingers, both secretly and openly, made deals with terrorist organization then led by Yassir Arafat. This led to the Oslo agreements in the time of Rabin. All contacts with terrorists, which were essentially crimes as defined by state laws, were done with full knowledge that these acts would be legalized by the district attorney's office with no chance of any punishment given to those responsible, and this indeed is what happened.
Ever since the Oslo accords, this has become the accepted modus vivendus and has become even more wide spread. Jews who defend themselves are arrested, often with no trial; but no steps are ever taken against Arabs, not for illegal building in the Galilee or the Negev, not for non payment of taxes, not for incitement to murder Jews, not for clearly and publicly expressed contempt for government organizations, etc. The epitome of this anarchy can be seen in the period of the Sharon government. More than 1600 Jews have been butchered in the last three years of the intifada. Only after rivers of blood flowed was the army given permission to act.
The blood curdling corruption of the law enforcement agencies reached even higher heights, and included eavesdropping, with no legal warrant, on right wing parliamentarians and even on the previous Prime Minister Netanyahu; this on direct orders of the head of police criminal investigations, Mizrachi.
And now Sharon has bought his seat in paradise as he continues on this path , connected to the left wing parties and the Arabs, he has promoted his plan for expulsion of the Jews form Gush Kattif and northern Shomron; all this to safeguard his personal home.
Rockets fall on Israel cities. There is no reaction. Hundreds of rockets in one day fall on Gush Kattif. --- The government is silent, the army is silent, and the courts are silent. The media is silent.
F. In summation –
I would like to turn first of all to my brothers, those who wear kippot. Please, stop acting "correctly" with the typical inferiority complexes of a Jew from the Diaspora. For years "transfer of Arabs" has been a forbidden slogan, while "evacuation of the settlements" is a legal slogan. Our political parties who sat in the governments did nothing to prevent this. Now is the time to react with strength and without fear, as now we have nothing to lose.
I would like to turn next to those whose heads are bare, like myself, and sound a warning: don't abandon your brothers, those who wear kippot, those who are equal active members of the entire Israeli nation, in every walk of life.
And above all, I would like to turn to you, the young people, the students, you are the future generation. The character of the state today will influence its fate and your fate in the future. Your alertness and your active involvement are required, not only to prevent the expulsion of Jews today, but also to deal with all the weakness and failures that were described above.
Lets us all enlist, now, to defend the Jews of Gush Kattif and northern Shomron, and to prevent, with our bodies if need be, the expulsion of Jews from Israel.
